How to Find Better Airfare

The airlines spend millions of dollars and unleash loads of computing power with a single goal -to squeeze as much money out of you as they can.But there are things you can do and steps you can take to make sure you don’t get taken for a ride on your next airfare purchase. 

Start Planning Early

The most important step you can take to get a great airfare deal is to start planning your trip well in advance of your travel date.  This doesn’t necessarily mean book early — in fact, often it’s best to wait — but the earlier you start looking, the better.  You never know when a great, low sale fare is going to come along and you want to be able to see it and pounce on it when it does.

 

With most airlines, the earliest you can check fares is 11 months in advance although some have smaller windows of 6 months. For international travelers for travel during high season Jun-July and December from USA to Asia, Europe, India and other regions, booking at least 3 to 4 months in advance is a good estimate. If you book too late, be prepared to pay more as most of the low fares seats would be sold out by then. 

 

Be Flexible on Date and Airport

 

Decide up front how flexible you are with your travel dates and even your travel cities.  For instance, if you are willing to fly on a Friday or Saturday instead of just a Friday, you will greatly improve your chances at landing a low fare.  The more days you are willing to consider, the better.  Also, bear in mind that the day of the week you fly on really makes a difference.  For flights within the U.S., it is generally (although now always) cheaper to fly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Saturdays.  For international flights, it is generally cheaper to fly on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays.   If you can only fly on one of those days in one direction, that’s better than none. On the other hand, most airlines add weekend surcharge starting from $20 upto $75 (one way)  if you are flying on FRI, SAT,SUN day which add up to your total fare.

 

Also, consider whether or not you are willing to fly into an alternate airport.  For instance, if you are going to San Francisco, sometimes fares to Oakland are much cheaper.  Same with Ft. Lauderdale for Miami; Newark for New York City; Baltimore for Washington, DC.  Often you can save a hundred of more dollars just by changing your airport. 

 

Check Fares Regularly

 

Once your travel dates are fixed, then start looking for what is available on your acceptable travel dates. A big key to finding great air fares is to constantly check what’s available, since you never know when a new sale is going to pop up.  Try to check at least once a week and keep track of the results — not just the price, but the number of acceptable flight options that are available for that price.  If you’re flexible on dates or airports, check all combinations that you’d be willing to fly.

 

When you search, make sure you are comparing apples to apples.  You will want to consider the total price, including all taxes and fees.  

 

Look for the Sweet Spot

 

When an airline first opens a flight for sale (usually 11 months in advance) the fares will usually be on the high side, as airline typically don’t offer sale fares for travel that far into the future.  The airline will let the flight sit for 2-6 months and try to sell as many seats as they can without offering any discounts.  After that, there will be two competing forces at play.  More and more sale fares will hit the market that will offer savings on lightly booked flights to your destination; while more heavily booked flights will get more and more expensive as all of the allotted seats in the lower fare categories get purchased.  This is where timing becomes everything.  Your goal is to find the sweet spot — booking not too early to miss out on all the sales, but not too late to pay a premium because the lowest priced seats are no longer available on your flights.

 

When does this “sweet spot” usually occur?  It can vary quite a bit but as a general rule of thumb, 4-8 weeks before your departure date is normally the best time to get the best fare.  But a few caveats:

 

1. If you can help it, never let yourself get inside 21 days before departure without having booked.  If you book within 3 weeks, the odds are very much stacked against you and in a vast majority of cases you will pay more than you would have had you booked earlier.

 

2. For travel on peak travel days to peak destinations, all bets are off.  In these cases, more often than not, the earlier you book, the better off you are, period.  This includes trips like New Orleans for Mardi Gras or Jazz Fest; Las Vegas for New Years; Florida around Easter/Spring Break time; Hawaii in late December/early January; or just about anywhere for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years.

 

3. The 4-8 week (For high season 3 months in advance) rule is generally too late for summer or winter vacation flights to Europe / Asia / India / Africa.  While not always the case, the best deals are usually gone by the end of March for summer and end of mid Oct for winter travels.

 

How do you know when you’re getting near the sweet spot?  If you’re checking fares regularly, consider how many different flight options are available for the lowest fare.  If you see that number decreasing, you know flights are filling up.  If there is only one viable flight in either direction at the lowest fare, be particularly careful about waiting much longer. 

 

Don’t Get Greedy

 

To many, it becomes an obsession to get the absolute, rock bottom, lowest fare.  But that’s like trying to sell a stock at the absolute high point, or buy it at the absolute low point.  It’s tough to do.  If you see a fare that seems reasonable, and if you have been checking around long enough to know it’s a better-than-average deal, don’t be afraid to pull the trigger!  Waiting too long can cost you hundreds of dollars, so be wary of taking that kind of risk if the goal is to simply shave another $10 or so off of your fare. 

 

Should you book online OR thru a Travel Consultant

 

What is the source of cheaper fare tickets ?  Before that let us explain what are the types of air tickets.

 

Regular fare ticket is also called Published Fare ticket ( or full priced ticket) .You can buy this directly from airline, either on airline web site or from airline office or any online travel web sites also. These types of tickets are commissionable or non-commissionable. If it is non-commissionable, most of the web sites charge a booking fee for ticket issue which are normally included in your tax or surcharges you may not notice.

 

Other kind of tickets are called discounted (or consolidated )  tickets which is much cheaper than regular fare tickets. You cannot buy consolidator tickets directly from airlines or airlines websites. Normally, consolidators (air ticket wholesellers)  buy bulk volumes of tickets from different airlines in negotiated low price and they sell those thru travel agents putting a more stringent conditions ( e.g. date change fee, cancellation fee, minimum 7 days stay period requirements, etc). In turn, travel agents may have negotiated contract with different consolidators to sell thru them. Most of the travel agents claim themselves as Consolidators but actually may not be, we can call them consolidator powered travel agents.

 

Travel agents have access to both types of tickets explained above thru their booking system software and they know which types of fare will be cheaper (as of now basis, no one can predict exact air fare in future). One airline, say for example , Singapore airlines may have 5 consolidators to sell thru them and each consolidator may have their own price for the same fare class ticket. A travel agent can find which consolidator is selling cheaper fare, if he/she  has contacts or negotiated contract with all 5 consolidators otherwise not.

 

Another difference is travel agents can block seats on waitlist which are of cheaper fare but online sites or airlines sites only sell confirmed seat as of now basis which may be of higher fare comparatively.

 

Also do not expect airline websites or other online direct buying websites to offer you the kind of personalized service that you will get from a travel agent. 

 

How to book thru a travel agent.  After you are done with your initial research and when your travel dates , airports (from, to) are finalized, vacation for travel approved, then give those details to the travel agents you trust and are comfortable to work with. Do not give the passengers names to all the agents initially.If you do so, many agents may book you on the same airline, and that can result in multiple/duplicate bookings with same names which are automatically cancelled by the airline, though no fault of the agent.  From most of the agents you will get an approximate fare quote OR  fare quotes range. At this stage you may not get an exact fare quotes as most of the agents quotes base fare with approximate taxes without checking seat availability. Just because an agent quoted you a price, do not expect that price to be guaranteed unless you actually finalize the purchase Then you finalize an agent you trust and are comfortable working with and give your detail passengers list. Then your agent will give you different options based on your travel requirements. The agent may take some time to create itinerary for you OR  may put you on waitlist for lower fare seats hoping to get it confirmed thru the consolidators or airlines. You can discuss with your agent about any adjustment until an acceptable itinerary is ready which you are willing to buy.

 

When you are already working with an agent, do not give passengers list to other agents, as duplicate booking can results from multiple sources in the same airlines and airlines auto detect computer system cancel all duplicate bookings and you will loose your chances of confirmed lower fare seats if blocked thru an agent.Some agents may know thru the computer booking system messaging that there are duplicate bookings in your name thru another agency and the agent may not put much effort on your itinerary.
